Airline standards debate

AIRLINE passengers throughout Australia are debating what level of service airlines should declare they are prepared to guarantee – or whether the Government should legislate to ensure minimum standard, following similar legislation in the US, for example, to curb lengthy passenger detentions aboard aircraft waiting to take off.

The Australian Government has warned airlines they face compulsory legislation unless they get their act together on customer service.

"The airline industry has been the subject of an increasing number of complaints since the advent of the low-cost airline model," the government said in its Aviation White Paper, released just before Christmas.

"The government considers it is in the industry's best interests, as well as in the best interests of consumers, to improve its complaints-handling procedures."
