Jetstar extras... at a price

JETSTAR today launched a new extras pack for economy passengers on its long-haul international Airbus A330:200 services that gives punters the option of pre-buying items like food and entertainment for $A60-$80 per sector.

The airline says the pack, which also includes other options such as blankets and pillows (otherwise purchased for $10) and 20kg checked baggage allowance, is in response to customer demand, although our first look at the product suggests that it is overpriced.

Assuming that food and entertainment are the primary demand drivers for the so-called Jet Plus pack, they can otherwise be purchased for half or less of the pack price.

A full meal service, for example is $A15 on long haul services or $10 for a light meal, while a premium movies-on-demand player package is $15 ($10 domestic/Asia short-haul/trans-Tasman).

A spokeswoman for the carrier has also warned that Jet Plus may not show up as a booking option on a flight if any component of the package is sold out on that service.

The airline is quoting examples of Jet Plus pricing that include $409 (Cairns-Osaka one-way), $479 (Melbourne-Bangkok) and

$489 (Melbourne-Denpasar and Sydney-Denpasar).
