JETSTAR will introduce a fourth daily flight between Melbourne and Launceston and a second daily service from Sydney to Launceston following Tiger Airways’ decision to axe the northern Tasmanian destination.

Jetstar says it will expand its future operations into Launceston by 40% with the delivery of its 59th 177-seat A320 in December.

In addition to the Melbopurne and Sydney flights, Jetstar also operates a daily non-stop service between Launceston and Brisbane.

“Jetstar’s new low fare services will inject almost 2500 additional weekly seats for the Launceston market into its year-round schedule in time to support Tasmania’s peak tourism season, whilst greatly enhancing direct flight access from the city for both leisure and business flyers,” the airline says.

“The extra flights along with an improved spread of interstate services across each day provide greater choice and ongoing certainty that Jetstar is a partner in growth with Launceston,” said Jetstar chief executive Bruce Buchanan.

Jetstar’s fares from Launceston start at $59 to Melbourne and $89.95 to Sydney.

QANTAS has announced its regional subsidiary, Qantaslink, will buy seven more 72-seat Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 turboprops, taking its total for the type to 28.

It hasn't specified where they will be used, only that they "will allow QantasLink to increase capacity on existing routes and investigate further network growth".
