Tiger axes Tassie flights
TRAVELCONSUMERDAILY.COM FRIDAY, JULY 15, 2010 LOW-COST carrier Tiger Airways is understood to have axed two routes in south-eastern Australia but has not even publicised the axeings even though competitor Jetstar has issued a statement saying it may add services on one of the routes. According to the Jetstar statement, Tiger Airways will drop its daily service from Melbourne to Launceston in northern Tasmania, a popular route for tourists arriving in the southern state, on August 2. It is understood Tiger will also drop its four weekly flights between Adelaide and Hobart at the same time. Tiger will continue to operate a daily Melbourne-Hobart flight. Jetstar says it will investigate operating more flights to Launceston on top of its three dailies from Melbourne as well as dailies from Sydney and Brisbane. Jetstar says customers of Tiger Airways who have a future flight between Launceston and Melbourne cancelled can receive a $50 Jetstar travel voucher for each paying passenger to put towards a return flight on any route on the Jetstar network. There are conditions. Launceston is a popular route for golfers heading for the fabled Barnbougle Dunes course at Bridport in northern Tasmania. Tiger alienated the golf market by charging $60 one-way for carrying golf clubs. Comment on this article |
