THE LONG-awaited overhaul of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport is expected to begin in the next few months.

The Jakarta Post reports the expansion will increase terminal space from the current 85,000 square metres to 190,000 square metres located between the present domestic and international terminals.

Financed from the cash flows of the state-owned airport management company, PT Angkasa Pura, the $US109 million project is scheduled to begin in this year’s third quarter, subject to agreement by the provincial government, completion of design work and the appointment of a contractor, the Post says.

Earlier reports has indicated a more ambitious project cost of around $185 million.

The expansion of the airport will require the demolition of a 170-unit housing complex located at the airport used to by employees of PT Angkasa Pura.
